San Diego, California
The pristine coastal waters off Southern California are perfect for throwing flies for tuna or mako as well as for many other types of fish. Among the varieties you might catch are bluefin tuna, calico bass, sand bass, and yellowfin tuna. One reason San Diego is considered one of the world’s premier fishing destinations is the quality of the fish as well as the climate. Fishing trips can be enjoyed year-round. Thanks to the mild climate, there will always be something biting.
Of course, there is some seasonal variation. For example, if you want to catch a monster bluefin tuna, late spring to early fall are the best times. Bluefin are the ultimate trophy fish as ones over 300 pounds have been recorded. Meanwhile, yellowfin tuna, which can reach up to 50 pounds, peak from April through September. If you really want to get some big fish, the stretch between Catalina and San Clemente offers not only tuna but marlin.
